As a new force in global trade, cross-border e-commerce has enabled more people to buy and sell globally. According to preliminary statistics, in 2023, China's cross-border e-commerce import and export reached 2.38 trillion yuan, an increase of 15.6%. Currently, cross-border e-commerce has become an important driving force for promoting foreign trade growth. Various regions are continuously deepening comprehensive reforms in cross-border e-commerce, innovating measures, breaking through bottlenecks, and promoting the accelerated development of cross-border e-commerce business.

     Rapid growth in export volume

The hot market situation of cross-border e-commerce has attracted well-known domestic e-commerce platforms to carry out cross-border e-commerce business. The Shanghai Airport Port has become an important channel for cross-border e-commerce to promote the export of domestic goods. With a low price strategy, emerging e-commerce platforms such as Xiyin, Pinduoduo, and TikTok have rapidly emerged, occupying a large share of the foreign e-commerce market. The reporter recently learned from the customs of Shanghai Pudong Airport that the export declaration volume of the three home appliance platforms mentioned above increased by more than 10 times year-on-year in 2023. The declared export volume has accounted for more than 30% of the total cross-border e-commerce export declaration volume at the port, ushering in explosive growth. In 2023, the declared volume of cross-border e-commerce exports at Shanghai Airport reached 440 million, a year-on-year increase of nearly twice, reaching a historic high; The total export value exceeds 85 billion yuan.

New channels are constantly being opened up

Recently, a fifth air cargo flight carrying cross-border e-commerce goods such as clothing and daily necessities took off from Ningbo Airport under the supervision of Ningbo Customs and arrived in New York after a 16 hour flight. "Now is the peak period for buyers' stocking, and it is expected that the stocking volume will increase to an average of over 120000 tickets per day before the Spring Festival, with a growth rate of 30%." Zhou Tangyin, the assistant general manager of Zhejiang Sinotrans Co., Ltd., who is responsible for transportation, is full of confidence.

Previously, there was no direct flight from Ningbo to New York, and Ningbo companies had to detour to Shanghai and other places in order to air freight their goods to New York. Nowadays, with the landing of the fifth air rights, these high-value and highly timely cross-border e-commerce packages can be directly flown from Ningbo to overseas consumers. At present, Ningbo Airport has opened four fifth air rights routes, namely Ningbo Liege, Ningbo Chicago, Ningbo Los Angeles, and Ningbo New York, all of which are cross-border e-commerce air export dedicated lines.

Regulatory reform helps to go global

Faced with the rapid development of cross-border e-commerce exports, Pudong Airport Customs continues to promote the reform of export cross-border e-commerce supervision business. "We have initiated electronic release for exports, and cross-border e-commerce logistics companies can declare a shipment of e-commerce goods. After successful data matching, they can receive customs release information within 5 minutes," said Song Ge, Deputy Director of the Express Department of Pudong Airport Customs. With the rapid growth of export business volume, some logistics companies have encountered bottlenecks in terms of cabin costs, operating hours, route selection, etc., and need to open charter flights to solve them. Pudong Airport Customs has customized a supervision plan for logistics enterprises, with advanced coordination and guidance to ensure zero service delay and zero waiting for customs clearance.
